I was at Meijer yesterday doing some grocery shopping. While there I went into the meat section to check out the organic meat selection. I couldn’t find any organic meat, so I asked one of the employees if they had any. They directed me toward a brand called “NatureWell” which is supposed to be “all-natural.” However, upon further discussion, the employee explained to me that the company gets away with calling it “all natural” because they stopping injecting the animal with steroids and/or hormones once they reach a certain age. Therefore, at the time of slaughter, the injected compounds are “no longer in there system. Again, this is according to the employee of the meat section with whom I spoke.

If this is true, this is very misleading at best. Steroid hormones cause far more damaging effects to the musculoskeletal system of animals than we acknowledge. It goes well beyond the idea that ‘the hormones are no longer in their systems.’

Beware of any meat that is not specifically labeled as organic. Although the USDA’s standards for organic are not ideal, they are still the best we have for the moment.
